HFES at a Glance
- HFES is a partial magnet school, meaning it is both a neighborhood school and a magnet school, however ALL students participate in the International Baccalaureate curriculum. To continue on the IB track for middle school you will need to register for the lottery to ensure your child has a seat. This needs to be done before entering 1st grade.
- Our IB middle school feed is Randolph Middle School. Beginning in the 2024-25 school year, the IB feed will change to Quail Hollow Middle School. If you do not wish to continue on the IB track, your child will attend their home school for middle school.

The IB Curriculum:
- Develop the attitudes and skills needed for both academic and personal success
- Emphasis on a global perspective and cultural diversity
- Develop study skills and introduction to time management strategies
- Greater focus on becoming an independent learner able to research and develop projects
- Emphasis on community awareness and service projects
- Students explore and learn through an inquiry approach to learning
- Integrated learning through the IB Transdisciplinary Themes: who we are, where we are in place and time, how we express ourselves, how the world works, how we organize ourselves, sharing the planet

Specials:
- 6 specials including: art, physical education, music, inquiry lab, science and Spanish
- Each special is 45 minutes
- Students attend each special once a week
- Each grade also has a 30 minute recess
- Small groups organized by grade level and based on your child’s learning needs
- Delivers individualized learning
- Meets the needs of every student at their level
- Focus is on literacy, but addresses other subjects too
- Generally 6 students per Fox Block
- Meet 45 minutes every day
- Interim evaluation every 6 weeks to check progress
