Please see a message from our PTA President, Sarah Baldwin Hayden:
Y'all, let's talk growth for a minute. Really.Big.Growth. And let's talk about the question I heard one father ask at a school info meeting "what is HFES going to do for MY child?" HFES is the 3rd highest for growth out of all the elementary schools in CMS. Top in growth for all elementary schools in the CMS South Learning Community district. *THIRD out of all elementary schools, FIRST in elementary schools in the South Charlotte learning community.* This is amazing. However, there is so much MORE to this 3rd highest growth announcement. What is HFES going to do for YOUR child? Let me tell you. A LOT. I also want to tell you that I made some assumptions in the past about growth and why our school did well in this area. I made the assumption that our high growth was perhaps because so many children came in below grade level...we could only go up from there, right? Kids who were coming in on grade level probably weren't growing that much because they were so high to start with, right? Well no, at least not at HFES. No matter what level your child comes into the school, they will be met with the support, small group instruction, and a tailored education plan based on where they are to help them GROW by leaps and bounds. So, if you look at this slide that outlines how our students scored, everyone at our school is growing. 92% of our students showed high growth. So not only are the kids who scored A's and B's proficient just like their peers at other schools, they are growing at a very high rate. These growth levels are NOT the norm! If you compare each group to their peers at other schools, the letter score might be the same but the growth at HFES is much higher. This means HFES doesn't stop, we challenge, we excite, and we help children LOVE to learn. ***This also means that if your child comes in on or above grade level, their growth will not be slowed down just because they are in classes with kids who are not on that same level. In fact, at our school they will not only stay on grade level but they will show substantial growth.*** But I don't want my kid's education to be all about it a test you may say. Yep, me neither. And the beautiful thing is that the kids are excited about school and love learning...it's about being excited about school, not preparing for a test. And all the special love, attention, and small group instruction that goes to a 3rd grader coming to us reading on a 1st grade level, is given to the 3rd grader reading on a 6th and 7th grade level. Your kid. My kid. All kids at our school are getting this attention. The results of this are across the board and consistent with each and every subgroup of students. Here is how they do it:
And because a school, no matter the score, is so much more than a letter grade...HFES is:
I cannot say it enough - this school is Charlotte's hidden gem. P.S. the group labeled as F for students with disabilities should be an I because there is insufficient data. ~ Sarah
